Zahr

Shah Zahr
1973-1998

Twenty years ago I had the good luck to first make the acquaintance of Shah Zahr, and while I thought he was pretty, a deep burnished palomino, I wasn't altogether impressed. Now after a several horses and more shows, rodeos and trail rides then I can count, I can honestly say he was the most impressive of horses.

Shah Zahr spent the first 15 years of his life competing. He excelled at speed events at a time when Arabs were considered showpieces. From his mother's Appaloosa side he inherited an uncanny reasoning power and quick judgement. He was a top barrel horse, a phenomenal pole bender, dabbled in roping and could out jump most thoroughbreds, this probably brought on by his aversion to touching anything with his feet. I recall many times being beaten by Zahr and my mother at playdays. Most kids had to just listen to their parents yell, I had to try to keep up with mine!

Later, after he settled down, he taught people how to ride. I do mean taught! A great many people in Arizona and probably half of Grayson County, Texas learned to ride on him. Unlike a lot of horses used for lessons, Zahr never soured, he considered riding fun and people his adoring public. He showed what it felt like to have a horse move correctly and with flair. He had a kind heart and never in 20 years did he buck or kick, yet he was no plug. At the core of it I think Zahr was a born entertainer, even at his worst moments he had style, its hard to be mad at a horse for prancing out of the barn if he can still prance in 5 hours and a half of a mountain range later.

I never really considered how much more a horse he was until he took over teaching my child. At 20 he entered into his 3rd generation of my family. I am truly grateful that my daughter had the chance to know and learn to ride on this extraordinary horse. She rode him in walk/trot classes and he was always the gentleman, even when crowded by other riders. We went on trail rides and I never had to fear for her safety or worry that she might be brushed off, she was on the best babysitter ever.

Zahr passed away this July and left a large hole in our hearts! He was truly unique and an outstanding individual. Horses like him only come along once. We are blessed that we had the chance to share his life for 20 years and that he chose to share himself with us, he was always a giver, never a taker.

Hast thou given the horse strength?
Hast thou clothed his neck in thunder?
Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper?
The glory of his nostril is terrible.
He paweth the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength
He goeth on to meet the armed men,
He mocketh at fear and is not affrighted;
Neither turneth he back from the sword.
The quiver rattleth against him,
The glittering spear and the shield,
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage,
Neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
He saith among the trumpets Ha Ha;
And he smelleth battle afar off,
The thunder of the captains and the shouting.
